Last weekend my boyfriend and I continued our trek to new Philadelphia restaurants by giving Distrito a try. Distrito is located only a few blocks from where we live and we always found the architecture of the building its in quite interesting.
When we arrived at the restaurant we were asked if it was okay to sit in their “Cantina.” Not knowing what the difference really was we said yes. Our server was very friendly since it was our first time there and the menu looked a little pricey but completely doable. I ordered the enchiladas, black beans, and rice and my boyfriend ordered the 3 taco platter, black beans, and rice.
The first odd thing that occurred was that the pieces of our meal came as separate dishes at different times. My $9 enchilada was the first to arrive and was just barely larger than the size of a jumbo Sharpie. As I stared down at what was supposed to be my dinner (as opposed to a mid-day snack) I began to feel a little worried. Finally we had my enchilada, my boyfriend’s tacos, and two small containers of black beans on the table. One wonders at this point: where is my rice? Well, I’ll tell you where the rice is: hidden beneath the black beans in that same small container.
Needless to say at this point we were a bit miffed. To top it all off when the bill came it was wrong. For the teeny tiny containers of black beans and rice they wanted to charge us $4 rather than the $3 stated on the menu. Needless to say I pointed this out to our server promptly who then corrected our bill.
All in all our food was nominal at best and the prices were outrageous for the quality and quantity of food. If you frequent this place you don’t go for the food – you go for the ambiance and the decorations. You might as well enjoy those decorations though since you’re the one that’s ultimately paying for them.
